In late May I purchased a new lens with the idea of exploring the woods in and around my house and the woods near my work. I set out to search and find the world of bugs—all those little creatures that are always around but never really looked at closely enough. And I found quite a collection of strange, colorful, odd-looking, and downright scary at times bugs, beetles, spiders—things that crawl, things that fly, things that hop and jump, and some that sit still long enough to have their photo taken. I looked under leaves, got down on my hands and knees, turned over logs, and stood still and listened and waited for something to move. I found a peacock fly and a wheel bug—two critters I had never seen before. I found a dragonfly that must have knocked itself senseless for a bit of time when it hit the side of the house—I moved it, photographed it and returned a bit later and it was gone. Flew off into the wild blue. Below are a small sample of the bugs and creatures I found. I am sure with a bit more work next summer I can find even more. All shot with a Nikon Z8 with a 105mm lens and a ring light—a set up for any time of the day.
